Facilitation Techniques/London one-day training course‏

This practical one-day course, which is running in London on Tuesday, 20.11.12, is aimed at delegates who are responsible for facilitating a group of people, objectively. It is ideal for those who want practical tips on how to deal with groups and the way in which they interact, on how to maximise a group’s potential and the right tools to use to generate and evaluate ideas within a group and help the decision making process and to design and manage an action plan. It will also provide strategies for dealing with difficult group members.

Renewable energy is a vital part of our future energy strategy. Despite widespread public support, opposition and misinformation continue to exist.
This course looks at the background to these issues, offers core information about key renewable energy technologies, and focuses on how to make the case for renewables both in terms of general publicity, and site-specific discussions.

People attending this course will learn how to:

1) Discuss and explain the role and importance of renewable energy systems in a low carbon future. 
2) Make a case for a local renewable energy project to the media, local people or a group of councillors. 
3) Describe in plain English the merits, and the potential problems, of various types of renewable energy systems (wind, solar PV, solar thermal, heat pumps, biomass, wave, tidal). 
4) Answer critical questions in ways that will help those who are confused or uncertain to see these systems in a positive light. 
5) Feel confident in supporting people looking to make decisions about installing a system for their home, business or community organisation.

Chris ChurchChris Church has worked in the voluntary sector and as a consultant for over 25 years. He is an experienced advisor on community and sustainable development issues, with a wide range of experience at international, national, and community level. He is an associate of the Community Development Foundation and a member of the London Sustainable Development Commission. Chris is chair of the UK Local Carbon Communities Network. 

Chris has previously worked with the Community Sector Coalition, the National Trust, BTCV, Defra, Groundwork, the European Union TACIS programme, Surfers Against Sewage and many local councils. He is trained as a teacher and has been developing and running training programmes for 22 years.

Managing volunteers can be an exhausting and time consuming process for both managers and volunteers themselves. However, organisations and social enterprises can be transformed by enthusiastic and engaged participation in voluntary work.

This course makes recruitment, management and, most importantly, engagement of volunteers easy. It encourages you to look closely at the motivations of volunteers and the organizations that use them, and draws on contemporary approaches including co-production and use of non-hierarchical teams to help you and your volunteers get the most from the relationship.

  • Why people get involved in volunteering, and why understanding motivations is so important
  • To create a range of roles for volunteers (including remote roles) and publicise them effectively

The day includes plenty of group work, exercises and discussion – you definitely won’t be staring at power point all day. You’ll also be given lots of opportunities to discuss your own experiences and develop personal strategies to aid your work.

Rebecca combines her training work with community activism and volunteering, using her experience to inform her training content and style. Rebecca has worked with and trained people from Age UK, Crisis, Greater London Volunteering, CVS, Waltham Forest Council, Citizens Advice Bureau, Directory of Social Change, National Association of Voluntary Service Managers (NHS), She has also developed education classes in Central America and worked extensively with Organiclea Workers' Co-operative.
