Many thanks to all those who helped make the Gathering on 1st April a success - especially parishioners at St John Vianney church who are following the Live Simply programme (looking at living more sustainably and in solidarity with the poor). An excellent afternoon and a chance to exchange ideas and plot new campaigns.

One thing that came out of the meeting (suggested by Helen Steel) is that SH should write a letter to Thames Water expressing its concern about how food growers on allotments and in private gardens are being penalised by the hose pipe ban, whereas commercial water users such as car washes and golf courses are not.  I am in the process of drafting a letter - any comments welcome please.

As part of the Council's 40:20 campaign and following Muswell Hill's 100 homes project, the campaign is now recruiting households who would like to monitor their energy use and look at ways to reduce it.  A part time coordinator will be contacting those interested (details to follow shortly).  In particular, the campaign is hoping to recruit households in the ladder,Crouch End, Noel Park and Bowes Park.

Check out the 40:20 website - http://www.haringey4020.org.uk/ and don't forget you can hire an energy monitor for £1 for a week from your local Haringey library - its easy to use - I just set one up for myself this weekend.....and I am no DIY genius.

Low carbon living talk 29 February

Prashant Vaze who wrote the book "The Economical Environmentalist" is coming to Wood Green library tomorrow Wednesday 29 February to talk about the real costs of taking action to reduce your carbon footprint. The book is written in chatty style and Prashant is realistic about how much an individual can do - but if we ALL do something, we can achieve a lot. If people want to discuss the talk after the formal meeting finishes we plan to move to Spouter's Corner, the Wetherspoon pub up towards Wood Green tube station. This should make for an informative and amusing evening. It also supports the campaign that the Council are running to raise awareness of how lifestyles affect carbon emissions, with a view to reducing emissions in the Borough by 40% (from 2009 levels) by 2020.
